Taiwan-Sweden trade talks enhance EV supply chain and green transition cooperation

The 2022 Taiwan-Sweden Trade Talks were held on 18 November 2022. Deputy Minister of Economics Affairs Chen Chern-Chyi "C.C." Chen and State Secretary to the Minister for International Development Cooperation and Foreign Trade Hakan Jevrell co-chaired this meeting. Both sides exchanged views on the electric vehicle (EV) supply chain, green transition, FinTech, and other issues.

Since Sweden's EV industry is booming, Swedish companies, such as Scania, hold a key position in the global electric bus industry. Meanwhile, Taiwan's EV supply chains feature advanced technology and high system integration capabilities, EV is an area with great potential for cooperation between Taiwan and Sweden.

During the meeting, Taiwan emphasized that it has entered international EV supply chains with regard to bodies, motors, automotive electronics, charging equipment, and other components. The Sweden intends to cooperate with Taiwan in related fields, such as batteries.

Both sides have adopted sustainable development as a policy goal. Taiwan has announced the "Pathway to Net-Zero Emissions in 2050" and the carbon pricing strategy to assist manufacturing sector with green transition. Sweden expects to strengthen cooperation with Taiwan in these areas.

Deputy Minister Chen praised Sweden's sustainable development and environmental protection measures. He also pointed out that Taiwan attaches great importance to cooperation with Sweden and intends to jointly work on deepening the bilateral partnership.

State Secretary Jevrell noted that Taiwan and Sweden are both innovative, open economies, with a strong standing in global supply chains. Both sides also share a solid belief in democracy, human rights, and the rule of law, both domestically and within in a rule-based international system. He also stated that Sweden looked forward to more interactions so as to further enhance bilateral commercial, cultural, innovative, and people-to-people relations.

Deputy Minister Chen and State Secretary Jevrell also attended the 38th Taiwan-Sweden Joint Business Council Meeting (JBC), which was hosted by the Chinese International Economic Cooperation Association (CIECA) and the Swedish Trade and Invest Council on the same day. Together, they witnessed the signing of the MOU on IPR and FinTech industry cooperation.
