In alignment with Executive Yuan policies, the Ministry of the Interior has been at the forefront of developing high definition (HD) maps standard and guideline for autonomous vehicles since 2019. Recently, it established a unified national map data format and verification framework, paving the way for smart mobility in Taiwan. In recognition of this pioneering work, the Ministry of the Interior has been awarded the prestigious “Geospatial World Excellence Award – Policy Implementation Award” by Geospatial Media and Communications Pvt. Ltd. On April 25, 2025, Chief Wu Jyun-Yi of the Satellite Survey Center accepted the award on behalf of the Ministry of the Interior at the Geospatial World Forum 2025 in Madrid, Spain, highlighting Taiwan’s leadership in integrating digital spatial data and advancing global intelligent transportation standards.

Launched in 2007, the Geospatial World Forum has grown into one of the most influential events in the global geospatial sector. Now in its 16th edition, the forum brings together over 1,200 experts, scholars, and government officials from more than 100 countries to exchange insights and drive innovation across geospatial technologies. This year’s forum presented 12 international awards across three key categories: Application Excellence, Technology Innovations, and Policy Implementation. The Ministry of the Interior stood out among global peers, demonstrating the nation’s growing leadership in geospatial governance and digital infrastructure development.

To support the growth of autonomous driving and smart transportation, the Ministry of the Interior commissioned the High Definition Maps Research Center and the Department of Geomatics at National Cheng Kung University to jointly develop a standardized HD maps data format. This initiative promotes data sharing and value-added applications across the public and private sectors, reducing development costs while enhancing vehicle safety and operational efficiency. In addition, the related standards and guidelines—covering point cloud and image data collection, road object feature extraction and attribute field definitions, data quality inspection and verification, and mechanisms for dynamic updates—have all been reviewed and approved by the Taiwan Association of Information and Communication Standards (TAICS), and formally adopted as common industry standards in Taiwan. Looking ahead, the Ministry of the Interior will continue to deepen the application of HD mapping technologies, laying a solid foundation for building a smarter, safer, and more sustainable transportation and urban environment in Taiwan.

Not only surveying data, but every mapped road carries the promise of safety and intelligence.

Day by day, we’re building a sustainable future for Taiwan!
