In line with the Ministry of Transportation and Communications'' directive requiring all ports administered by the Taiwan International Ports Corporation to obtain and maintain ESPO EcoPorts certification, Port of Hualien continues to promote green-port-related policies that improve the quality of the port environment for stakeholders, surrounding communities, and Port of Hualien staff. An EcoPorts recertification site inspection and meeting were convened at the port last month (September 2022), during which ESPO''s commissioned inspection authority in Taiwan, Lloyd''s Register, comprehensively evaluated the port''s current environmental performance.

The EcoPorts recertification process, in addition to evaluating Port of Hualien''s environmental data and related details for the 2020-2021 period, considered initiatives and projects such as the port''s smart rain runoff collection and distribution system, coastal cleaning and open-fishing programs, and the use of waste concrete in tetrapod wave-dissipating blocks. Representatives of the Maritime and Port Bureau''s East Maritime Affairs Center and Hualien County''s Environmental Protection Bureau were also in attendance not only to confirm the port''s progress on related efforts and that port cargo handlers were continuing to upgrade facilities and equipment to meet higher emissions standards but also to better understand the steady and solid progress being made in implementing smart-port and fiberoptic backbone infrastructures at the port.

Lloyd''s Register''s lead auditor noted that Port of Hualien receiving 1st Place in MOEA/WRA 2021''s Water Conservation Outstanding Performance Awards for its water conservation efforts reflects very well on the port''s overall commitment to ESG and to continuously improving its performance as a sustainable green port. He further recommended that Port of Hualien''s success in water conservation be promoted as a case study on ESPO''s main website, offering a role model for eco-ports worldwide to consider and emulate. At the conclusion of the review, Lloyd''s Register affirmed it would recommend to ESPO that Port of Hualien''s EcoPorts certification be reaffirmed in recognition of the international port''s ongoing commitment to environmentally and ecologically sustainable operations.

Beyond fulfilling its responsibilities as a good corporate citizen, Port of Hualien works diligently to protect and improve its environment and to develop the significant growth potentials for tourism and environmental sustainability in Eastern Taiwan. Looking ahead, Port of Hualien shall continue to develop port infrastructures and improve port safety to provide world-class port services for shipping companies, businesses, and Hualien residents that sustainably advance economic growth, quality of life, and port business into the future.
