Taiwan-France cultural workshop held to address audiovisual industry trends

Taiwan-France cultural workshop "tfatelier," jointly hosted by the Ministry of Culture and the French Office in Taipei, opened at the National Taiwan Museum (NTM) Nanmen Branch on April 24. This marks the first time that the physical workshop has resumed since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020.

To address the pressing trends in the audiovisual industry, the workshop, organized in collaboration with Taiwan Creative Content Agency (TAICCA), revolved around the movie and OTT themes, bringing together experts and scholars from Taiwan and France for in-person and online discussions.

On the opening day of the workshop, TAICCA chairman Tsai Chia-chun (蔡嘉駿), TAICCA CEO Izero Lee (李明哲), French professionals, including Julien Ezanno from the National Centre for Cinema and the Moving Image (the Centre National du Cinéma et de l'image animée), and others were invited to speak at a lecture that focused on the future potential of film and television platforms in the new economy (Le cinéma et la nouvelle économie de la SVOD).

During the two-day workshop, other participants included the director of the MOC's Bureau of Audiovisual and Music Industry Development Hsu Yi-chun (徐宜君), deputy director of the Taiwan Film and Audiovisual Institute Chen Te-ling (陳德齡), and more.

Nicolas Rouilleault, an audiovisual attaché from the French Office in Taipei, highlighted that the growth of the audiovisual industry between Taiwan and France is facing similar challenges. This led to discussions on how to establish related regulations to promote the production of original content, rearrange the pipeline of talent cultivation to facilitate opportunities for international cooperation, and attract audiences to watch movies in theaters.

In his speech, the director-general of the MOC's Department of Cultural Exchange Kuei Yeh-chin (桂業勤) stated that audiovisual works demonstrate the nation’s cultural power. To strengthen Taiwan's cultural content, MOC is dedicated to promoting various measures, including providing policy guidance, investing in content creation and development, offering funding subsidies, and creating supportive environments. He added that the workshop is serving as a learning exchange platform for the two countries, which is now an important channel for Taiwan to learn from France’s practical experience.
