The Executive Yuan's Department of Gender Equality (DGE) on Monday published the 2024 Gender at a Glance in R.O.C. (Taiwan) report. In 2023, the nation ranked sixth globally and first in Asia in Taiwan's first ever inclusion in the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development's Social Institutions and Gender Index. Last year, the Executive Yuan also adopted its own gender equality index, which measures Taiwan's performance against the European Union's (EU) Gender Equality Index (GEI), and placed Taiwan 12th against 27 EU member nations.
The DGE stated that the criteria for its gender equality index were chosen to parallel the EU's GEI framework, in addition to incorporating further local indicators for gender equality. This enables Taiwan's progress on gender equality to be measured while also aligning closely with EU benchmarks. The criteria are divided into six core domains (work, money, knowledge, time, power, health) and an additional domain (violence).
