Taoyuan City Farmers' Association and Farmers' Cooperative Association of Guam sign a memorandum of agricultural cooperation; Mayor Cheng hopes to promote agricultural exchanges and strengthen bilateral relations

Taoyuan Mayor Cheng Wen-Tsan attended the “Signing Ceremony of the Memorandum of Understanding between the armers' Cooperative Association of Guam and the Taoyuan Farmers' Association at the City Hall on the morning of October 31. The ceremony was witnessed by a video conference with Governor of Guam Lourdes A. Leon Guerrero. Mayor Cheng said that Taoyuan and Guam have been promoting many exchanges for a long time. They signed a sister city agreement last year (2021), hoping to increase mutual exchanges in tourism, education and culture, industry and economy, and medical care.

Mayor Cheng pointed out that Guam and Taiwan interact closely and the average flight time between both sides is only about 4 hours, thus Taoyuan is more than happy to play the role of the forefront of exchanges with Guam. Taoyuan's agriculture is small but strong, and it has rich experience in technological agriculture and organic farming, etc. He believes that the exchange between the two sides can make each other complementary and grow together. At the same time, after the border control is lifted and flights are gradually resumed, the two sides are expected to have more in-depth and diversified exchanges in the areas of tourism, education, culture, economic and trade. In addition, Mayor Cheng also said that Taoyuan has a large medical center, Linkou Chang Gung Memorial Hospital, which is very suitable for various medical cooperation projects with Guam. It is hoped that further bilateral medical exchanges can be promoted in the future.

Governor of Guam Lourdes A. Leon Guerrero said that agriculture is an important source of livelihood for the people of Guam, and Taoyuan's experience in agricultural technology is very important to Guam and the Asia Pacific region. She believes that with the assistance of Taiwan, agricultural associations, and academia, we can help each other's agricultural development. Guam will continue to work with international partners to help Guam become self-sufficient in agriculture, grow its economy, and achieve the United Nations' goal of sustainability.
